Inktober 2016 – Day 2

Some things are just loud and nobody denies it

A rocket or earthquake, those things are not quiet

Nor will you find peace with a firetruck near

Or a middle school flautist right next to your ear

But the noise I hate worst is more subtle and pink

When some dude smacks his gum while I’m trying to think

Day 16 - Uninvited

Day 2 - The Swarm

Today's challenge: "They watched the destruction from the twentieth floor, as the city lights went out one by one."

I began this one by wondering why the lights were going out. At first, I assumed the darkness was a result of the destruction, like from a fire or volcano. Then I realized it might be more interesting if maybe the lights were attracting unwanted visitors and the only way to avoid destruction was to turn them off. I hope those people up on the twentieth floor balcony figure that out pretty soon!

Day 1 - Jestbot 1300

Today's challenge - a medieval robot and its operator! Behold, the Jestbot 1300 - everything you would ever want for your twelfth-century entertainment needs!

Evolving Skills?

It's February 12, and you know what that means? That's right! Once again it's Darwin Day! For the last two years, I've drawn the same picture of Charles Darwin, hoping to see how (or if) my style or technique has improved or changed. Here's a link to the 2013 picture, and here's the one from last year. I don't think today's version is much better, but at least it took me far less time to draw!

Elf

What would Christmas be without a friendly elf? (Aside from all the religious significance, of course.) Why, look! Here's one now!

A Teacher's Lament

A class like today’s makes me frown

Every kid seems to act like a clown

We could have so much fun

And we’d get so much done

If they’d simply shut up and sit down!

Windy

I just heard a little boy say,

“Golly Mom, it’s sure windy today!”

She said, “You’re not wrong.

It’s incredibly strong!"

Then they jumped up and both blew away

(Edit: I just noticed that this is my 700th post! Who'd have thought I'd be able to come up with that much random junk to say or draw?)

Family Time

Today is my 13th wedding anniversary! Unfortunately, my wife has a pretty nasty cold, so my 10-year-old daughter decided to write her a couple of poems to cheer her up. We thought they were pretty cute, so we asked her if we could post them here. She agreed, on the condition that I draw our family as hearts, like she had done on her card. So here are her two poems, followed by my version of our heart family.

    It's not fun when you're sick
    Sitting down and laying all day,
    But when you're sick I'll help you
    Move and get on your way.

           *****

    I'm so happy that you're in my life
    You are the best Mommy of all,
    You help me stay happy and cheerful
    Even if I fall.

As they say in their instructions, it's not actually Sunday yet, but since today is 24 Hour Comic day, they thought it was appropriate.

The Wink Writes Back

Way back in May I wrote a poem
About a strange event
A lady winked at me and I 
Was not sure what it meant

But then we went our separate ways
I never thought I’d see
Or hear from her again, it’s just
A distant memory

But then today, out of the blue,
A letter in the mail
Addressed specifically to me
So what did it entail?

She’d read about my nice award
And wanted to express
Congratulations for my prize
And yet I couldn’t guess

How she remembered who I was
From that one far off date
But she’s not wrong when she says I
Make Indiana great

And so tonight I send my thanks
Sincerely out to her
I’m grateful for this note from our
Lieutenant Governor!

Taft

Well, the windows aren't completely in yet. They need to come back tomorrow to finish up some of the trim and the kitchen garden window and shutters are still being assembled at the factory, so they'll be installed at a later date. In the meantime, I have to post something else tonight, so...

Last Day of Camp

2014 Summer Camp, Week 1, is over! I would celebrate more, but this is kind of how I'm feeling right now (plus I have 3 more weeks to go)...

Personal Transformation

Another 3-panel picture for the deviantart transformation contest. For this one I dug up a series of pictures drawn at different times through my life to illustrate some of the changes I've gone through so far.

1982 - Age 10 - Artistic ability: minimal - Dreams: unlimited
2005 - Age 33 - Artistic ability: improving - Dreams: reality setting in, probably never going to be an astronaut
2014 - Age 42 - Artistic ability: still working on it - Dreams: looking forward to new challenges, family by my side

Lori's Triumph

She passed! She passed! We’re all so proud!

The celebration’s long and loud

For my dear wife, who’s worked so hard

With pencil, book and index card

Studying for weeks on end

We barely even got to spend

Much time with her, the girls were sad

Making do with dear old Dad

While Mom, refusing to relax,

Learned theories, scientists and facts

All that stuff so she could be

Teaching Sociology

And so, today, with little rest

She headed off to take the test

Despite her nerves, she didn’t cry

She nailed it with a single try

So now I think we all concur

We are so very proud of her!
