Mindblown Guy
Here's the final version I'm going to submit. The contest ends in a few days, so you'll probably be seeing some more in that time. If you have any suggestions or ideas for one, please let me know!

Stunned Guy - Part 2
I think I've realized why I don't do many animations here - it takes a long time! Anyway, here's the guy from yesterday looking a little more surprised.

Stunned Guy - work in progress
Over at deviantart there's a new contest to draw "emoticon stickers" - basically small, animated drawings showing some kind of emotion. This first one is for a stunned/mind blown kind of guy. Obviously it's just the still image tonight, I'll add the animation later.

A Good Judge
Today I got the letter I've been waiting for! Last October, due to the government shutdown, I was out of work for 3 weeks. I applied for and received a little unemployment assistance, but then a few months later I was told I had to pay it all back! So, after a long and irritating appeal process, today the judge's official decision arrived and I get to keep the money! Hooray! Here's a little doodle illustrating my feelings towards the judge right now (you probably don't want to see what I would have drawn if it had gone the other way!)

Sally Ride
Today is, of course, Memorial Day, but it also happens to be the birthday of Dr. Sally Ride - the first American woman in space who used her fame to encourage students to pursue careers in math and science. Here's a little poem for the occasion:
Today we remember the heroes who died
While protecting our freedoms and dreams
But we also commemorate Miss Sally Ride
Who showed life can be more than it seems
So as you remember their great sacrifice
You can soar like a bird with new wings
If you heed the example of Dr. Ride’s life
And go achieve wonderful things!

Everyone Needs A Towel
Today is a perfect trilogy of geekery:
1) May 25th is the birthday of Frank Oz, master puppeteer, who brought to life Yoda, as well as Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, Cookie Monster, Bert and Grover!
2) On May 25, 1977, the original Star Wars movie opened!
and
3) May 25th is also Towel Day, celebrating the life of "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" author Douglas Adams!
Here's my attempt to combine the three...

Camelopardalids - an Update
So, after staying up until nearly 4:00 AM, this is how the meteor shower last night turned out.
I sat there all night in the dark
For a camelopardalid spark
But I’m sad to recall
That I saw no stars fall
But I did get to hear a dog bark!
(Actually, I saw 2, but I was having a hard time fitting that into the rhyme scheme. Here's an updated version of yesterday's picture that more accurately reflects this event.)
(Not pictured: sad trombone waahh-waaaahhhh sound) |

Camelopardalids
Tonight there's supposed to be a brand new meteor shower. Will it be spectacular? Will it be a complete bust? Nobody knows! Go out after midnight and see for yourself! For once it's perfectly clear!
If they show up, the meteors should originate to the north, in the constellation Camelopardalis. Can you guess from the name what that constellation is supposed to be? Here's a hint: it's an animal that looks like a camel, with spots like a leopard...

Vanilla Pudding
All those who like their flavors plain, say “Hey!”
And celebrate both near and far away
Because good times are sure to come your way
It’s National Vanilla Pudding Day
To celebrate you won’t need a bassoon
A party hat or any old balloon
Just grab a bowl of pudding and your spoon
And snarf it like a ravenous baboon
You’re meant to do this, it’s your destiny
Then when you’re done, you’re sure to plainly see
All of the truths of life revealed to thee
And then, perhaps, you might be cool like me!

Happy Birthday to Chew
Today I was going to do a follow-up to yesterday's sketch, but then I found out it's Peter Mayhew's 70th birthday! (For those who don't remember, he's the actor who played Chewbacca.) I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to draw Chewbacca about to enjoy his birthday cake.

Cave Lander
Today I was sitting in a meeting, doodling in the corner of my notepad while half-listening to my boss discuss something completely unrelated to me with my coworkers. Here's what I drew. If it looks rough, remember I only had a few minutes and the original is less than 2 inches square. I will probably use it as the basis of a better doodle in the near future...

No Dirty Dishes
Today is No Dirty Dishes Day! It's supposed to be a day when you use paper plates or go out to eat to relieve yourself from the chore of doing dishes, but it didn't quite work out that way around here. Which reminds me, there's probably something I should go do...

Godzilla
I don't really have any desire to see the new movie, but I needed to draw something for tonight, so here he is...

The Wink
I had a lady wink at me
After work today
And then she winked at me again
I don’t know what to say
I mean, I’m not sure what to do
When things like this occur
Because this lady is our state’s
Lieutenant Governor!
And granted, she was probably
Just trying to be fun
Because she came to work to see
All of the stuff we’ve done
But still I can’t help wondering
If I’m somehow to blame
I know I’m irresistible
And boy, have I got game!
And never mind I saw her wink
At other people, too
I’m sure she’s just obscuring this
Political taboo
It’s just too bad for her that I
Am married happily
Because despite her flirty ways
She’s never getting me!

Talent Show
Tonight was the big talent show
At our church, and I just had to go
Both my daughter and mom
Did their parts with aplomb
And my pride set my whole face aglow

Belated Birthday
Today was my co-teacher's birthday, and I completely forgot! Here's the sad kitty that's going on the belated birthday card she'll be getting tomorrow.

Sassy Giraffe
Yesterday I might have added a line or two to my Mother's Day poem that perhaps, in the wrong circumstances, could conceivably be misconstrued as slightly insulting to my dear sister. By way of apology, I present this giraffe...

Happy Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day to everyone out there who is or might consider themselves a mother. Here's the drawing I made for the front of my mom's card:
And here's the heartfelt poem that went inside:
Here’s to a classic
Through and through
(Of course I’m talking
About you!)
You raised me well,
Your joy and pride
And as for Beth,
At least you tried!
So with this card
I hope to say
Have a Happy
Mother’s Day!
(My sister did not find it as amusing as I did!)

A New Wrinkle
There's been a new development in the case of the wandering iPhone. My co-teacher got her phone back today, and we think we have a pretty good idea who took it...
Well, that missing phone caused quite a fuss
And the culprit surprised all of us
It appears she who did it
Wasn’t some little kidlet
It turns out she was driving their bus!
That's right, we now think it was the school bus driver! (Of course this might all change by tomorrow.) However, this driver is the same one who went off-site to get lunch and then decided she didn't need to stop at the security gate when she returned and instead just drove straight on through!

Stern Monkey
Today, my co-teacher couldn't find her phone. Somehow it turned up wedged down in a seat on the school bus used by the class that came to visit us today. Stern monkey is not amused by such shenanigans.

Pain In The
Maybe after yesterday's poem I had this coming, but can anyone guess what super fun experience happened to me today?
If you guessed, "A student stabbed you in the rear end with a pencil while you were bending over to pick up a crumb" - Congrats! You must be psychic!

Punny Limericks
I apologize in advance...
In Paris, I got off the train
And walked to a bridge in the rain
“Watch me!” I then cried
Then I jumped off the side
And everyone said “He’s in Seine!”
***
A guy I know got in a fight
It lasted all day and all night
His left leg and left arm
Suffered permanent harm
But don’t worry, he turned out all right
***
“I went to a bookstore downtown,”
A friend of mine said with a frown,
“Got a book there for free
All about zero-g
And now I just can’t put it down!”
***
A man who had worse luck than most
Owned a bakery down by the coast
He was set to retire
When his building caught fire
And now his whole business is toast
